Waiving development charges: Is province’s definition of affordable housing realistic?

The Ontario government defines affordable housing in Niagara as homes priced between $305,000 and $320,000. Developers can have fees waived if they build units at or below this price for 25 years. However, industry experts and advocates believe these prices are unrealistic. Builders say it's challenging to sell homes at $300,000 and advocate for more support. Advocates argue that even the defined affordable rental prices are unaffordable for many in need. Habitat for Humanity also finds the province's housing price targets unrealistic due to added costs like land fees and HST.
